The Incas lived in the Andes mountains--an area that was not meant for farming. In order to improve the land's farming conditions and so the water would not run down the sides of the mountains, the Incas cut into the ground thus creating "andenes." Andenes look like giant steps cut into the mountain side. By doing this, the Incas were able to farm on the mountains and they were also able to water their crops much easier. This technique was so successful that natives still use it on hillsides and mountainsides even today.
